Learn to Skate

Our Learn to Skate Play program focuses on taking those first steps on the ice as a skater and/or a hockey player. All your skater needs is a helmet and skates. If your skater knows how to skate, then check out the Intro to Hockey Program! This program is a place to learn basic skating skills and is a stepping-stone for hockey, figure, freestyle, synchronized, and recreational skating.

The Learn to Skate program fee is $25 per skater per session and will be credited towards this year's hockey registration if you register for hockey. Bring your own skates and a helmet or use what we have at the rink. NOTE: Limited sizes are available on a first-come first-serve basis.

Each session includes 4 - 1 hour long classes and is open to the public.

Registration does require you to create an account if you don't already have one. You must register online but you can pay online or in person.

Frequently Asked Questions

What equipment is required to participate?

Participants only need a helmet and skates. A warm coat, long pants, and gloves are also recommended.

Do we need our own hockey equipment to participate?

Sparta Youth Hockey has loaner equipment on a first come first serve basis, however, you are welcome to bring your own if you have it.

Do I need a Learn to Skate USA membership to register?

No! Learn to Skate is the stepping stone to playing cross-ice 6U and 8U hockey. Memberships are not required until after this step.

What if the participant has skating experience?

That's great! We love introducing new players to skating. Your athlete will be on the ice with coaches and instructors who are there to help skaters of all abilities and show them how FUN skating is for everyone.

Is there an age limit on who can learn to skate?

Technically, no, but Sparta Youth Hockey is currently set up to instruct skaters between the ages of 3 and 15. If we have adults who are interested, they can reach out to one of oru board members.

What if I can't make a session?

No problem. Talk with your coach and see if you can make it up during another session.
