Coaching

Coaches are an integral part of our association and the team. Without coaches, our teams would not have any structure or organization. Being a coach doesn't mean you need to have skates on OR have any previous hockey experience; it means that you'll be dedicated to the players and help them become better players and have fun throughout the season.

What's Expected

As a coach, you're expected to lead by example, promote teamwork, dedication, develop players, and, most importantly, have fun.

  • Communicate with your players about performance and your expectations of them.
  • Communicate with parents about their role as parents and your expectations of them.
  • Communicate with the team about practice and game changes.

Practices

  • There are typically 1-3 practices per week.
  • Practices take place in Sparta and Tomah.
  • Practices may share ice with other teams.
  • Practice schedules are typically set at the beginning of the season.
  • Any practice tools you'd need can be requested by contacting one of the board members.

Games

The number of games per season varies depending on the team level (A, B, C), size, and availability. The number of games includes tournament games. A general rule of thumb is

  • 10U - 25-30 games
  • 12U - 30-35 games
  • 14U - 35-40 games

Game scheduling is at the discretion of the coaching staff and the majority of the schedule is defined prior to the season starting. Games are typically held during the weekends, but can be held on weekdays if ice is available.

Tournaments

Our association teams typically schedule

  • 1 away (overnight) tournament
  • 1 home tournament in Sparta
  • 1 home tournament in Tomah
  • 1 local tournament (optional)

Local tournaments are not always available but they are great options to play other teams we may not normally have the opportunity to play.

If other opportunities come up, the coach can reach out to the team to check availability to attend other tournaments.

Players split any associated tournament fees for non-home tournaments.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to reach out to the coaching coordinator.
